Welcome to Barangay Mintal: Davao City’s Little Tokyo

Barangay Mintal is a district in Davao City with a deep cultural and historical heritage. Known as “Little Tokyo” before World War II, Mintal became a hub for Japanese settlers during the early 1900s. It was a center of trade and commerce, and the Japanese community established various institutions like a hospital, school, shrine, and monument, leaving a legacy that continues to shape Mintal’s identity today.

Recent years have seen more people moving to Mintal due to its peaceful environment, green spaces, and proximity to universities like the University of the Philippines Mindanao (UP-Min) and the University of Southeastern Philippines. However, the growing population has raised concerns about possible congestion and the loss of Mintal’s once serene charm (SunStar Davao, Growing Mintal: Solution or Problem?).

Efforts are now underway to preserve Mintal’s heritage. The Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) launched the "Little Tokyo Project" to revive Mintal’s Japanese roots with the development of cultural sites, a hospital, and a cemetery. This initiative aims to honor the barangay’s historical significance and strengthen the friendship between the Philippines and Japan, a bond highlighted by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s visit in 2017.
